Today, Jyamiti & Sea is more popular for the Terrazzo slabs and installations we custom make for our clients. The slabs, used as table tops and counter tops, are designed after carefully understanding the aesthetics our clients hope to accomplish in terms of the look and finish. All our terrazzo pieces are liquid and stain resistant. Made in Goa, these are today shipped to all corners of the country.
Jyamiti & Sea also provides cast-in-situ flooring services for terrazzo and other cement based finishes. At the moment the service is available in Goa and Bangalore. However, we are open to travelling with our team to your city as well.
What is Terrazzo?
In layman's language, terrazzo is the composite material and finish obtained by mixing course aggregates to concrete and then later polishing the set material to reveal the aggregates in a random or intended pattern across the surface of the material
The photo above shows a table top made with the most basic terrazzo obtained with a standard size of mixed natural stone chips in white cement.
Terrazzo, as a technique, can be traced back to ancient mosaics of Egypt. However, 18th century Italy (Venice, in particular) is when and where most of the current form of terrazzo evolved.
Although, terrazzo is making a huge comeback as a premium material for floorings, tabletops, countertops, wall finishes, etc., the material, as such, is not new to us. We have all grown up seeing terrazzo floors in our childhood homes or at least in some houses we visited in our childhood. The term 'mosaic' is what we are more familiar with when we talk about terrazzo.
Variations in Terrazzo
Today terrazzo can either have cement as its base material or epoxy. At Jyamiti & Sea, we mostly make cementitious terrazzo. The base is made either with grey or white cement depending on the colour we would like to achieve.
Pigments are added to give the cement it's colour. While our aim is to achieve the intended colour perfectly, because the mixing process is manual, and because cement at times do not interact in the same way with pigment and also at times because of variations in the raw pigment itself, some variation in the shade of the colour can be expected. As a result, it is better to have an open mind to this variation when you are looking for terrazzo.

Normally, aggregates in terrazzo are either natural stones, glass or a mix of both.
Natural stones are available broadly in six colours - white, black, maroon/red, yellow, dark green and pink/peach. Glasses are normally available in transparent, brown, green, olive green and dark blue. Light blue glasses are also available, but are rarer to find. That said, at times, other shades of glasses might be possible to be sourced as well.
The photos above show terrazzo with natural stones used as aggregates. As you can see, it's possible to be creative with the design not just with the mix of the colours, but also varying sizes of stones and their concentration.
The photos above show glass chips being used as aggregates in terrazzo. Again, in this case too, it is possible to mix the different colours together and play with the concentration to achieve a unique look.
Using both natural stones as well as glass chips is a possibility as well.

Terrazzo Slabs and Table Tops
Q. Is terrazzo heavy?
A. Terrazzo is heavy, yes. However, for table tops, you should be good with a sturdy base made of wood, metal or concrete, itself. If you are not sure what kind of a base is needed, we can always provide references to help you understand.
Q. Will we ship to your city?
A. We ship across India. Unless its an offbeat place, we should be able to deliver your terrazzo to your doorstep. We can ship to the nearest town / city in case your property is in a remote / lesser known location.
Q. Can my terrazzo break during shipping?
A. We take sufficient care while making the slabs, packing them and choosing our delivery partners to ensure a safe delivery. We are quite confident that your terrazzo will reach you safe and sound.
Q. Can terrazzo stain?
A. All our terrazzo slabs are treated with sealants that make them liquid and stain resistant. As long as you wipe off spillages fairly quickly, you can avoid stains. And by quickly, we don't mean immediately. You do not need to rush to get a wipe as soon as something spills over. Finish off your meal and then have it cleaned. If you can do it before then even better. However, we would not suggest to leave any spilt liquid / food on terrazzo overnight or for a very long time.
Q. Can terrazzo crack?
A. Terrazzo can crack, but so can wood. Or sometimes even stone slabs. While fine hairline cracks, can appear on terrazzo over a period of time, and is often considered as part of the cement / terrazzo aesthetics these are harmless unless you see them grow and widen continuously. Very often they are barely noticeable and so do not pose a serious concern aesthetically too.
Q. What is the cost of terrazzo?
A. We will be able to give you a quote after discussing your requirement. Terrazzo is not available at a very low price, for sure, because the process is time and labour intensive. However, the process ensures that you get a durable and timeless material.

Q. Where do we provide our cast-in-situ terrazzo flooring services?
A. Cast-in-situ terrazzo flooring services are currently available in Goa and Bangalore. However, we are open to having a discussion with you to see if we could provide it in your city as well.
Q. Do we make terrazzo floor tiles?
A. At the moment we are not doing Terrazzo or any kind of cement based tiles.
Q. How long does terrazzo flooring take?
A. Terrazzo flooring will take a minimum of about 20 days and will take more time if the area is big. Also, certain terrazzo designs take more time to prepare, cast and polish. Since a lot of terrazzo work is about the details, it is difficult to work with a very crunched timeline.
Q. Are terrazzo floors porous and absorb spilt liquid and stain?
A. Naturally, yes, they are. However, sealants are applied nowadays to make the floor stain and liquid resistant to a large extent.
Q. Will a terrazzo floor crack?
A. Yes, terrazzo floors will develop cracks at some point, probably. We take care to minimise its occurence. However, it's best to take a few cracks as part of the terrazzo floor aesthetics. If you want a completely crack free floor, then terrazzo might not be the best material for you.
