What are Cement Tiles?
Cement tiles are handcrafted, pigmented concrete tiles made without kiln firing. Instead of being baked like ceramic or vitrified tiles, they are formed in moulds, compressed under a hydraulic press, and cured slowly in water. The colour is not a surface print — it is a real pigmented cement layer, which means the pattern does not peel or fade over time and makes re-polishing possible.

The format has a long history. Decorative cement tiles were widely used across Europe and North Africa in the late 19th century, and in India their closest traditional relative is the Athangudi tile from Tamil Nadu. While made using a different technique, both share the same approach: hand-poured pigments, natural curing, and craftsmanship rather than industrial firing.

Cement tiles are dense and durable, and they age gracefully. Instead of looking worn out, they develop a soft patina similar to natural stone. Properly installed and sealed, they can last for decades — many Indian homes still have original cement tile floors from over half a century ago.
They are also comfortable in daily use: naturally cool in warm climates, matte and non-slippery underfoot, and easy to repair since individual tiles can be replaced if needed. Their soft mineral colours and non-glossy finish give them a timeless appeal that doesn’t go out of style.

Because each tile is made using moulds and hand-mixed pigments, customization is a major advantage. Colours, patterns, and layouts can be tailored to suit the space — whether you want a subtle floor or a bold, defining feature.

Options for Cement Tiles
In-House Designed Tiles
Our in-house collection is a curated range of patterns developed through our own design explorations. Through these designs, we try to give a traditional craft a more contemporary touch. We move away from the very traditional visual language associated with Athangudi style patterns while still staying true to the nature of handmade cement tiles.
The focus is on cleaner and more organic shapes and lines, balanced colour palettes, and layouts that work comfortably in present day homes and commercial spaces. Over time, we aim to build a recognisable Jyamiti & Sea design language. The intention is to create floors that feel rooted in craft and clearly distinct in character.
These designs are ready to produce. You can select a pattern and still customise colour combinations to suit your space. This makes it a straightforward way to get a distinctive handmade floor without going through a full design process and hence, quicker execution timelines.
We are going to be adding more designs soon.

Custom Tiles
Because cement tiles are made using individual moulds and hand-mixed pigments, a floor can be designed specifically for your space. We can develop a completely new pattern, adapt a reference you like, or scale and recolour an existing design to fit room sizes, furniture layouts, and architectural elements.
Custom tiles work especially well for feature areas — entrances, courtyards, restaurants, retail spaces, or statement rooms in a home. The process typically involves concept drawings and colour trials, before production, so you can see and approve the material in real life. The result is a floor that is not just selected, but designed — something unique to the project rather than chosen from a catalogue.

A. Most Tile Installation team should be able to install the tiles and most would also be able to polish them and seal them with a sealant.

Q. Can I customize designs and colors?
A. Yes. Jyamiti & Sea provides customisation of colours for existing designs and also customisation of new designs.

A. Because these are handcrafted products, slight tonal shifts, tiny pinholes, edge softness, and natural variation are normal. These are considered part of the charm, not defects.
