Although, most people are aware of the difference between IPS and Terrazzo, we do get this question from potential clients. Sometimes clients are only partially aware of the differences. Each has distinct features, benefits, and aesthetic qualities. In this post, we will dig into the differences between Terrazzo and IPS to help you make a well-informed choice for your next project.
Understanding Terrazzo
Terrazzo is a remarkable composite material that has graced floors for centuries. It consists of chips from marble, quartz, granite, or glass set in a cement or epoxy binder. The result is a striking, polished surface that is highly customizable in color and design.
One of terrazzo's standout features is its thicker top layer, which can withstand many rounds of polishing. This makes it possible to maintain it for decades, even in high footfall / rough use areas. Well-maintained terrazzo can last upwards of 50 years easily with relatively lesser maintenance than any other material, making it highly desirable for both commercial and residential settings.

Exploring Indian Patent Stone (IPS)
In contrast, Indian patent stone (IPS) (also called oxide floors) is made from a blend of cement, sand, and oxide pigments and do not have visible aggregates / chips. This material is commonly used in both homes and commercial venues due to its relative affordability compared to terrazzo and also for its unmatched characteristic aesthetics. IPS offers a rustic charm and comes in an array of colors, making it a favoured choice among those who desire a more traditional and earthy look.
However, IPS has a thinner top layer compared to terrazzo. This characteristic limits the polishing possibilities beyond the initial one. For instance, while terrazzo can be polished every decade to maintain its shine, IPS is usually difficult to re-polish. That said, IPS that has been receiving even a basic maintenance often do not need a second round of polishing ever.

Aesthetic Appeal
When it comes to aesthetics, both terrazzo and IPS have distinct visual qualities. Terrazzo is known for its vibrant colors and intricate designs. With customizable embedded chips, it can create remarkable patterns that can enhance the ambiance of any space. Possibilities of using inlays and playing around with the size and mix of chips provides limitless creative possibilities of designing a space with terrazzo.
In contrast, IPS offers a more understated, natural appearance. The rustic finish and natural shade variations provide a warm, inviting vibe. This makes IPS ideal for spaces aiming for a cozy and artisanal atmosphere, such as coffee shops or boutique hotels and residences that want to highlight craftsmanship.
Terrazzo looks more premium, whereas IPS scores higher in terms of artisanal value.

Maintenance Considerations
Both Terrazzo and IPS are low maintenance finishes. However, terrazzo is more sturdy than IPS. As a result, in the long run, Terrazzo will outlast IPS, particularly on floors.
Resistance to surface cracks is also more in terrazzo. IPS will almost certainly develop surface cracks - at times immediately post casting - that are, therefore, considered a part of its aesthetic appeal. Terrazzo cracks as well, but the chances are a lot lesser. A lot of these cracks however are superficial and pose no threat to the structural integrity of the space.
Final Thoughts
Both terrazzo and Indian patent stone (IPS) bring unique advantages and aesthetic qualities to the table. Terrazzo excels in durability and multiple polishing options, making it a wise long-term investment. Meanwhile, IPS offers rustic charm, which is what it is often prized for.
