What Makes True Craftsmanship Essential in Terrazzo and IPS?

Cement is an incredible material, especially when used as the final finish! It's truly marvellous, but if you stray even slightly from the process, it can turn into quite the challenge.

That's why, when working with Terrazzo or IPS, it's not just about the material composition or the technical process; the artisan's skill is absolutely crucial.

What seems like a straightforward task is actually quite the opposite! If a mason (or 'Mistri' in India) doesn't perform their job well, it becomes evident during polishing. And if the artisan polishing the surface isn't up to par, the final look and feel suffer.

There's very little room for error. The work is, quite literally, "cast in stone."

In India, there's often a lack of appreciation for this craftsmanship, leading clients to choose the cheapest option, which can result in a disappointing quality of work. Unfortunately, this sometimes gives the material a bad reputation. People start to think Terrazzo or IPS aren't reliable. The truth is, both Terrazzo and IPS are among the best materials for the Indian context, whether for adapting to weather conditions or for long-term maintenance.

These days, skilled Terrazzo and IPS craftsmen are hard to find. Between the two, we've found that IPS demands even more skill than Terrazzo. In our team, there are only a couple of 'mistri' we trust with IPS.

What was once a common skill (think pre-1990s) is now rare because, for two or three decades, vitrified tiles and marbles took over from these wonderful materials.
